A tribute concert, fund raiser and live recording session

Paradiddle Records and Live in the Lobby, in honor of Randy Newman's 70th birthday, present: Sail Away—The Musical Journey of Randy Newman.

Some people think of “Short People" when they think of Randy Newman, but he is considered by many to be "one of the greatest American Singer-Songwriters and film composers.” He has been nominated for nineteen Oscars, three Emmys, six Golden Globes and five Grammys for his work on movie soundtracks like Ragtime, The Natural, Toy Story 1, 2 and 3, and many others.

Most people think of “Local original Music’ when they think of Live in the Lobby, but we have occasional "tribute” concerts for the fun of it, and often to raise funds to support our unique "venue within a venue." In addition to Live in the Lobby, the "Music on Main Street" series features local classical music, and our "All That Jazz" series was a hit for several seasons. Profits from "Sail Away" will be used to purchase a piano for Live in the Lobby so we can offer even more local music options in Lobby.

Paraddidle Records will be recording this unique concert for the next in their "Uncovered": series that has featured Long Island artists doing the music of Bob Dylan and The Kinks—so far. A Long Island based company, Paradiddle has been hailed as "One of the true champions of Long Island music." by Good Times Magazine and have been particularly proud to showcase Long Island's outstanding talent. They have also been volunteering at Live in the Lobby since season three, handling the sound and recording many of our shows.

Randy Newman has long been one of the most musically and lyrically ambitious singer-songwriters ever to be at play in the fields of popular music. From his debut release, Randy Newman in 1968, right through his Academy Award winning movie soundtracks, this Live in the Lobby excursion will be examining the career of one of the most successful American songwriters. In addition to his hits, the show will explore various themes Randy has expounded on including love, God, and America.

Critics have lauded the musical depth, edge, and literary quality of his lyrics and an unusually wide range of artists have been recording his songs almost from the beginning of his career. "Mama Told Me Not To Come" was a huge hit for Three Dog Night, and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" was a Joe Cocker hit that was also recorded by several other artists. Judy Collins and several others recorded his song "I Think It's Going to Rain Today." His early songs were recorded by Gene Pitney, Jerry Butler, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Jackie DeShannon, The O'Jays and Irma Thomas, among others.. He released five albums in the '70s, including Little Criminal, which caught the public's ear with the hit "Short People”. In the '80s, Newman’s foray into film composing earned him his first two of nineteen Oscar nominations; Trouble In Paradise and the Grammy-winning score for The Natural. Next, Land of Dreams was considered another breakthrough work. In the '90s, Newman earned an Emmy and several more Grammys for work on films like Toy Story, James and the Giant Peach, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story 2. In 2002, Newman won his first Oscar for Best Original Song for Monsters, Inc.
